ABOUT US
OVERVIEW

Youth Mission Team Australia (YMT) is a non-profit, charity organisation and one of the leading Catholic youth ministries in the country.  Focused on the critical areas of faith and character development in Australian teenagers, YMT has pioneered a new style of peer to peer youth outreach, being the first of its kind to originate in Australia in 1986.

YMT has head quarters based in Wollongong, New South Wales, and operates four ministry teams throughout Australia based in:

Sydney
button Melbourne (also visiting Hobart)
button Adelaide
button Perth

PROGRAMS

YMT facilitates seminars, retreats and programs for secondary aged school students in high schools throughout Australia.  YMT complements these programs with additional follow up activities, such as weekend and school holiday camps, Friday night youth groups, youth events and peer to peer mentoring.

Programs communicate via a unique combination of creative mediums relevant to contemporary youth culture such as; music, drama, sport, games, sharing real life stories, movie clips, newsworthy events, etc, to present the gospel as a message that is critically relevant to students daily lives.

YMT Programs are based on over 22 years of active youth research. This research has proven four key elements fundamental in a young person achieving their greatest potential in life.  It is these five elements which form the basis of YMT Programs:

  1. Faith in God
  2. Belief in Self
  3. Strength of Character
  4. Positive Role Models
  5. Environment of Validation & Support

ROLE MODELS TEENAGERS RELATE TO

By its very nature the teen years are typically when we turn to groups for acceptance and validation.  Each Youth Mission Team is a group of charismatic, fun-loving, leaders of outstanding faith and character, who inspire and support young Australians to make wise and healthy life choices.

Often in contrast to their response to older authorative figures, teenagers are incredibly open to YMT members, because they are of a similar age and can simply share their amazing personal stories with their peers.

Contrasting the often negative voices of the media, the wrong crowd at school or for some, even the voices of family – YMT provides peer voices that validate the intrinsic value of every individual and the importance of caring for ones self through wise daily choices.

Team members share first hand accounts of how God has helped them deal with typical, everyday teenage issues from getting bullied in the school yard, to coping with the divorce of their parents, through to saying no drugs and alcohol, overcoming body image issues or navigating a healthy boyfriend/girlfriend relationship.  YMT share their experiences of a God that actively provides the strength and capacity to cope and navigate teenager’s daily lives.

Through strong, positive role models, YMT members provide young Australians with an environment in which they feel not only safe but esteemed to make choices AGAINST common youth pitfalls and FOR a future of purpose, freedom and living life to the full.

A UNIQUE APPROACH

YMT is unique because Team Members are young people themselves, so can relate as peers, and they present a faith that is heartfelt and relevant to teenager’s everyday lives.

Each YMT is made up of 6 to 8 Team members who are:

Aged between 18 and 30.
Passionate about bringing hope to young Australians.
Young people who evidence a personal relationship with God.
Young people of outstanding character
button Willing to defer study or career to volunteer one year full time to youth ministry
but Able to relate to students as peers and role models
but Living examples of what it is like to live out a three dimensional faith that is exciting, heartfelt, and a secure foundation for life
but Able to share first hand their own experiences, of how God helps them deal with the everyday issues teenagers face

Team members commit to live a radical, common life style of prayer, simplicity and mission for one year at a time.  They share a house together, begin and end each day with prayer at 6am and 10pm, attend daily Mass, spend time each day in worship and personal time with the Lord and are pastorally and spiritually mentored throughout the year.

Team members also spend two days a week in the regular workforce and pool their wages to cover their basic living expenses, leaving themselves an allowance of just $25 a week.  Wednesday to Sunday is then available for full time ministry.

22 years of experience have proven that this challenging lifestyle is the foundation that empowers Teams with a supernatural unity and capacity to do God’s work.
